As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Write Around Portland is governed by a group of volunteers called the Board of Directors. Our Board is a diverse group of people who are passionate about helping others access the healing power of creative writing.

Required Qualities
Personal commitment to Write Around Portland’s mission, values and programs:
- A deep, passionate commitment to and belief in Write Around Portland’s mission, work and core values and a dedication to our continued success.
- As part of our mission and core values, support and engage in Write Around Portland’s efforts to prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and access (DEIA), including our racial equity and anti-racist work.
Service as a Write Around Portland ambassador:
- Advocate for Write Around Portland using creative approaches to make new connections with your personal and professional networks.
- Attend our annual fundraising event, and, whenever possible, our spring and winter readings.
Active participation in development and fundraising:
- A personally significant contribution, with Write Around Portland the top or one of the top three recipients of your annual charitable giving. Your contribution could be financial or through committing to a specific volunteer project. We do not have a minimum giving requirement.
- Active participation in the board’s donor cultivation, development and fundraising efforts. Willingness to support the organization through personal asks, events, and other activities.
Fulfillment of board membership expectations:
- Commit to serve at least one 3-year term (subsequent terms are two years) and to participate in 12 monthly meetings per year. With the understanding that personal and work scheduling conflicts may arise from time to time, a commitment to coordinate with the Board Co-Chairs and/or Executive Director about items and work plans from missed meetings. (We also offer leaves of absence should you need to step away for an extended period of time.) Board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month from 5:30-7:00 pm; many are hybrid meetings, while some require in-person attendance.
- With our strong encouragement, the confidence to speak up and share your unique perspective and opinions.
- Ability and desire to work collaboratively with staff, board members and other volunteers, and to respect the different roles and responsibilities of the board and staff.
- Timely communication with the Board Co-Chairs and/or Executive Director about any issues you may have in discharging your board duties.
- Willingness to assist in finding an appropriate replacement when you are ready to transition off the board.
