Taking Chances

Donors helped DeJai discover a new passion

DEJAI INITIALLY joined our PIVOT Job Corps writing group mostly out of obligation. At first, she wasn’t thrilled, but felt she should as student body president. DeJai reflected, “I never knew writing could be something I’d enjoy.”

Then, the healing power of creative writing kicked in.

“The program helped me get a lot of thoughts down that I didn’t even know were in my head,” DeJai told us.

The activities were simple but inspiring. For instance, an activity about oranges ended up being a way to process being a new mom.

“It was a really amazing experience. The program brought me out of my shell, and it opened my eyes to the power of trying new things. Because you’ve got to take chances to figure out who you are,” DeJai said.
